Tips for the Perfect Eyeliner

Guest post by Jecca Blac, a UK based, gender-free makeup brand. Jecca Blac began with safe space makeup lessons for makeup wearers at the very start of their journey with self expression – presenting clients an opportunity to experiment with makeup for the first time in a relaxed, private, judgement free setting. Many of the clients to attend these makeup lessons were from the trans and cross dressing community, and came to Jecca Blac’s Founder with requests for concealing beard shadow and developing a contour regime.

Because of this, Jecca’s entire product range is driven by our community and strives to be user friendly, accessible and versatile in order to truly meet the needs of ALL makeup wearers. We consider ourselves experts in the field of meeting the needs of transfeminine makeup wearers, as well as those who wish to cross dress and want to incorporate pigments for the eyes, cheeks and lips in their makeup looks!

Today we’re sharing our top tips for discovering the right liner shape for you!

We know it can be daunting, trying to discover the perfect eye shape to create with shadow and liners. Because of this, we wanted to make discovering the perfect eye shape as easy as possible for you.

So How Do You Create Eye Makeup for Crossdressers?

Discover what your eye shape is

Eyes come in all shapes and sizes. From hooded to deep set, from wide set to narrow, from round to almond shaped – we truly feel everyone deserves to celebrate their eye shape, and the first step is to discover the shape we naturally have before applying any makeup at all. Our eye shapes are special and should be emphasized or decorated as much or as little as we feel they should be! It’s up to us to decide which parts of our eyes we want to emphasise and shape – and this can depend on our mood and the look we’re aiming for on any given day. We don’t feel there are any particular rules when it comes to considering which eyeliner styles do and don’t work for different eyes, but some popular choices are:

  • Creating an elongated, lifted look if you have hooded eyes
  • Creating a more rounded, doe-like effect
  • Creating an illusion of less hooded eyes

To decide which eye shape you already have to work with for any makeup looks, begin by looking straight ahead into a mirror in lots of natural light. Are your lids folding onto your lash line? If they are, you have hooded eyes. Are your eyes left with lots of space between your upper eyelid and your brow bone? If yes, you have deep-set eyes. Finding your eye shape will be the first step in achieving your goal with building out eye looks suited to any occasion.

What would you like to change about your eyes?

Using liner to shape your eyes is all about creating an illusion with more and less space on different areas of the eye. If you want to elongate your eye, you’ll want to use less pigment in the middle parts of your eye, and more pigment on the inner and outer corners of your eye. If you have round, deep set eyes and want them to appear more almond shaped, we recommend keeping pigment away from the inner corners of the eye and focusing mainly on the outer corners. The ‘inner corners’ are the corners of your eye most near to your nose – and ‘outer corners’ are the corners most close to your ears. Avoiding pigment on the inner corners and focusing on the outer corners will elongate and lift the sides of your eyes, creating a sultry, lifted result.

Start with a kohl liner

When gaining confidence with liners, we know how messy liquid liners can be. Because of this, we recommend starting with a pencil kohl liner. Start with a little product and then work your way up to the result you’re looking for. Using a small eyeshadow brush will help build up the product so you can tailor it specifically to your desired intensity and will help shape the product without adding more. Smoking out the kohl as little or as much as you see fit will help you gain confidence over time with developing and tailoring a shape, signature to your unique eye shape and the design you’re striving to achieve.

Don’t shy away from colour

When it comes to completing any eye look, we love colour. That’s why our Play Pots offer a simple and effective pop of colour when applied to the eyes, cheeks, lips, or anywhere on the face and body you want to apply some colour to. Once you have achieved your desired result with your kohl liner, pat some Play Pot into the middle of your lid and blend out into the socket. This will add a seamless pop of personality to your look, as well as some added dimension to your entire makeup look.

Lashes!

Once you’re happy with your eye shape and have added any final touches with playful pops of colour, it’s time for lashes! Apply mascara – we love to do this for top AND lower lashes, but you can also further shape your eyes with falsies if you’re feeling confident! Half lashes are a great starting point for false eyelashes – they tend to be flattering on all eye shapes, and are easier to apply than full length eyelashes.
